Lingyun Wei (Amy), from China, is a Pathways student in her second term at Concordia College, having previously completed the Undergraduate Preparation Program (UPP) with Kings New York. She recently won a role on the Concordia Student Government Association, so we caught up with her to find out more.
Hi Amy. Can you tell us about the Student Government Association position you won this semester?
I am the International Senator. I will make decisions with the other members, I will get a chance to vote and will help decide on what happens on campus. I can be the voice of International Students at Concordia.
How did you learn about this position? What did you have to do to apply for it?
I got the information directly from SGA. Every student was emailed and I learned the position was open. So I went to the SGA meeting and applied for the job. I had to complete an application, and I filled it out. Then I had to get 50 students signatures to support me. I got all the signatures in one day!
What special skills do you bring to the role?
I have passion and enthusiasm. I am nice to people and I love helping others. I feel passionate about helping other people. I really wanted to do something for international students, instead of just being part of the group. I think I can do my best to improve the campus for other international students.
How did your time in Kings and Concordia College courses prepare you to be successful in this role?
I learned how to participate. You need to not only study but also participate in campus life. You need to do the work for the people. That’s my lesson.
What do you hope to accomplish in your position this year?
I just want to try my best when it comes to making decisions. I want to make wise choices. I will listen to all the information that International Students want me to share with the SGA to solve their problems.
